The University Hospital of Bellvitge presented an innovative treatment for pulmonary emphysema

On April 18th, the Pneumology Department held a joint meeting with the Catalan Society of Pneumology (SOCAP) on innovative treatment for endoscopic volume reduction of emphysema with the application of an Aeriseal© polymeric sealing (Ferrer Internacional SA).

The meeting was attended by Dr. Edward Ingenito, pneumologist and inventor of the system, Dr. Antoni Rosell, from the Endoscopy Respiratory Unit, Dr. Saludos Santos and Dr. Marta Lopez from the MCOP Unit and Dr. Enrique Cases, bronchoscopist from the University Hospital La Fe in Valencia. The speakers explained the basis of the treatment and the initial experience of both centers.

The Clinical Direction of Respiratory Diseases took advantage of the event to open the doors of the Multidisciplinary Committee for endoscopic and surgical treatment of emphysema-only one initiative at state level- to all attendees. It also established the incorporation of our hospital to the international study ASPIRE, which has become the reference center for this study in Catalonia.

Aeriseal polymeric sealing is a foamy solution of 20cc that is applied endoscopically under general anesthesia in the hyperiflated upper lobes areas of patients with advanced emphysema. The purpose is to create a controlled retractable healing that reduces the volume of these lobes allowing better breathing dynamics.
