The researcher from IDIBELL Joan Gil wins the Award in Applied Biomedicine Valdes-Salas
The jury decided unanimously to grant the award to Joan Gil for his research in new treatments for leukemia and B cell lymphoma. The experimental work carried out by the group led by Joan Gil, in collaboration with the company Advancell, has led to a patent of the use of acadesine molecule. This work has successfully passed all stages of preclinical trials and has led to the development of a clinical trial, currently underway, to treat patients with chronic
lymphocytic leukemia. This is the first test done for the treatment of cancer, based on a patent created by a group of the Spanish public research system.
The jury highlighted the work of Gil as an example of how basic quality research, proven and published in prestigious journals, can lead to important practical applications in the field of medicine.
Valdes-Salas Foundation organized for the first time this award in collaboration with the University of Oviedo and the companies Bayer, Cofas and Farmaindustria. The award recognizes successful collaborations between researchers and
companies. The aim is to reward researches used by a company with positive financial results.
