The protocol Study and treatment of Merkel cell carcinoma has been published

Merkel cell carcinoma is a particularly aggressive tumor, with an approximate mortality rate of 30% 2 years after diagnostic and of 50% 5 years after. It usually starts as a fast-growing nodule. It’s asymptomatic and blueish erythematous and its development takes place from weeks to months. It is usually located in those areas exposed to sunlight. 80% of these injuries are found in head, neck and extremities.

In order to help the study and treatment of this carcinoma, the Commission for Skin Tumors at Bellvitge University Hospital and ICO (Catalan Institute of Oncology) have recently published the protocol “Study and Treatment of Merkel cell carcinoma”. This protocol covers from the testing and diagnose of clinically suspicious patients to treatment with surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy, as well as follow-up.
