The online haemodiafiltration reduces mortality by 30%

In an article published in the most important International Journal of Nephrology, the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (Jasna).

With a three year monitoring , the trial demonstrated a reduction in mortality of 30% among patients undergoing online haemodiafiltration (HDFOL), compared with the usual technique of hemodialysis. Bellvitge Hospital was one of 27 centers that have participated in this clinical trial that demonstrates for the first time results that will change the landscape of renal replacement therapy.

Despite the advances that have occurred in recent decades, the annual mortality in these patients is between 15% and 25%. The online haemodiafiltration increases the purification of ureminc toxins and, unlike hemodialysis, adds additional pressure to the process called convection, which makes it possible to turn over a volume of ultrafiltration of blood between 15 and 30 liters per session. With this technique is achieved a better cleaning of particles of a higher molecular weight.

The study shows that the all-cause mortality was reduced by 30%, The cardiovascular 33% and infectious causes in 55%. It was also observed a 22% reduction in hospitalizations and 28% of episodes of hypotension during treatment.
