The Minister of Health opens in IDIBELL the new Metabolism and Cancer laboratory
The Minister of Health, Boi Ruiz, opened on May 11th the new Laboratory of Metabolism and Cancer of the Institute of Bellvitge Biomedical Research (IDIBELL).The opening ceremony was also attended by the mayor of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Nuria Marin, and representatives of the partner institutions of IDIBELL (Hospital Universitario de Bellvitge, Catalan Institute of Oncology and the University of Barcelona).
The new Laboratory of Metabolism and Cancer is a space of over two hundred square meters with the most advanced equipment. The works of the laboratory and the equipment had a cost of € 400,000, funded by the 2011 Sub programme of INNPLANTA.
The laboratory is led by George Thomas, one of the world’s foremost researchers in the field of metabolism and cancer. Dr. Thomas joined IDIBELL at the end of 2011 coming from the University of Cincinnati, where he headed the Institute of Metabolic Diseases.
This new groups is also joined by Sara Kozma, also from Cincinnati, and Albert Tauler, a researcher of the University of Barcelona affiliated with IDIBELL.
George Thomas has been recognized by the scientific community as an innovative leader in the field of signal translation and the control of cell growth. The Researches done by him have revolutionized our understanding of signal translation pathways and processes that lead to the emergence of many diseases. The work of Dr. Thomas has allowed the development of new anticancer drugs, some of which are being applied to clinical care and others are being tested in clinical trials.
The hiring of George Thomas IDIBELL took over two years of negotiations. Finally, the arrival of the research was made possible by funding from the Healthcare Institute Carlos III of Spain, through the program of accredited health research centers.
