The Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the University Hospital Joan XXIII, the Functional Breast Unit of the University Hospital of Bellvitge and the Catalan Institute of Oncology have agreed to introduce in this center the most modern techniques of breast reconstruction in patients suffering from cancer.

The HUB is collaborating in the implementation of techniques for breast reconstruction at the Hospital Joan XXIII

The agreement was reached with the collaboration of Dr. Josep M. Serra, chief of area of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the Hub, who attends twice a week the Hospital Joan XXIII to perform oncoplastic surgeries.

This initiative avoids amputations without reconstruction and sequelae in patients in the area of Tarragona and subsequent trips to the Hub, all the while collaborating in the training of other surgeons of our organization and in the efficiency of the health system.

The HUB is the center of reference of the healthcare regions of Tortosa and Tarragona for highly complex procedures.

One of the techniques introduced is the DIEP (deep inferior epigastric perforator), which, through microsurgery, in the same surgical excision of the tumor the breast is reconstructed using grafts of tissue and fat from the abdomen of the same patient. These tissues bind to the chest through an artery and a vein so that the new breast has its own vascularization.

Dr. Serra began using the DIEP around the year 2000 in the University Hospital of Bellvitge. He is an expert in oncoplastic surgical techniques and he began applying it for the first time in Spain and second in Europe in 1994.

Thanks to his collaboration Joan XXIII Hospital has since January 1st 2011, 22 oncoplastic surgeries, two of which using the DIEP technique in two women of 46 and 47 year old.
