Selective biopsy of the sentinel node is a reliable technique for lymph node staging on patients with early stage oral squamous cell carcinoma. Presurgical (before surgery) lymphogammagraphy is also essential, since it may show unexpected drainage pathways.

These are the main conclusions of  the study  “Lymphoscintigraphy in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Sentinel Node Biopsy and Its Role in the Surgical Planning”, published by Clinical Nuclear Medicine, and written by Aída Sabaté, Ana M. Benítez, Antoni Marí, Carlos Arranz, María Teresa Bajén, Sandra Maymó and Josep Martín Comín, from the Nuclear Medicine and the Oral and Maxillofacial  Departments at bellvithe University Hospital.
