The University Hospital of Bellvitge (HUB),opened in 1972, is located in the city of Hospitalet de Llobregat. The hospital belongs to the Catalan Health Institute (ICS), a public company, with legal personality and self-management capacities that provides comprehensive services to primary care as well as to hospitals throughout Catalonia.
The hospital is part of the Southern Metropolitan Management Administration Area of the ICS which is the agency responsible of the coordination and management of all centers, services and healthcare institutions in: Hospitalet de Llobregat, Baix Llobregat, Alt Penedès i el Garraf.
The agency unites under the same umbrella all healthcare processes and support of the ICS to this area regarding primary care (53 centers) and specialized attention (HUB and Hospital de Viladecans)
The HUB is one of the only five hospitals in all Catalonia certified as third level center, allowing the hospital to treat high level complexity cases and perform surgeries requiring the use of the latest technology, such as cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, neurosurgery or transplants. The hospital has all medical and surgical specialties (except pediatrics and obstetrics.)
The HUB is the Hospital of reference to 343,172 people of Hospitalet and Prat de Llobregat and is also a center of reference to more that 2 million of people of the southern metropolitan area when their cases require the use of the latest technology.
Its strategic goal is to promote technological and healthcare service innovation as well to increase all medical and surgical activity of high complexity cases.
Has been awarded four times, in 2002, 2006, 2009 and 2010, the TOP20 award, recognizing the hospital as one of the best amongst the 150 top Spanish hospitals evaluated every year.
For more than 25 years, the hospital has been an educational center linked to the university of Barcelona offering classes of medicine, nursing, odontology and podiatry, it also offers more than 40 postgraduate courses in more than 40 specialties.
The hospital is a state of the art research center and member of the Biomedical Research Institute of Bellvitge (IDIBELL), one of the few government owned centers certified with the highest research level by the Sanitaria Carlos III Research Institute (belonging to the Ministry of Science and Innovation.)
The hospital is immerse in an ambitious project of expansion that will allow the center to expand its current facilities in more than 40.000 m2 (32 new surgery rooms, a new IC unite with 80 beds, a new emergency room, etc.)
The Hospital is an important part of the public consortium BIOPOL of Hospitalet an entity which goal is to create a common working space for hospitals, universities, research centers and companies generating an added value in the field of healthcare science.
