New advances in ophthalmology focus on Conservative surgery of the eye

One of the most innovative treatments in the field of ophthalmology is surgical resection of melanoma of the uvea (primary tumor of the eye), consisting of local excision of the tumor area to keep the other eye and continue maintaining vision. “This is a complex surgery that can be applied to well-selected tumors where the only alternative would be enucleation,” said Dr. Josep Maria Caminal Doctor of Bellvitge University Hospital and a specialist in this technique. “The Bellvitge University Hospital is the only center of reference for the state with experience in this technique,” he adds.

One of the important developments was the new approach to treat patients with Fuchs’ endothelial dystrophy and cataract.

In recent years it has been developed the selective corneal transplant, which allows only the replacement of the affected cornea, the endothelium, which is placed inside the eye through a small incision similar to the cataract.

The selective corneal transplantation has many advantages, by preserving part of the cornea of the patient, it improves the outcome and has a faster recovery, “said Dr. Tomàs Martí, a specialist in corneal transplantation at the University Hospital of Bellvitge, pioneer in this type of intervention.
