Dr. Fernando Contreras leads the HUB participation in research on risk factors for schizophrenia relapse

A group of researchers at the University Hospital of Bellvitge and IDIBELL participate in the study of Neurobiological and clinical determinants of second schizophrenia Episodes. Longitudinal study of psychotic first Episodes , which has been financed by the FIS.

It is a coordinated study involving 15 clinical centers of the  network CIBERSAM (Center for Biomedical Research in the Mental Health Network), which theUniversity Hospital of Bellvitge is part of, and they forecast to recruit 300 patients. The main researcher is Dr. Miguel Bernardo,  from Hospital Clínic. The IDIBELL-HUB group’s main researcher  is Dr. Fernando Contreras, who works in the psychiatry group led by Jose Manuel Menchón.

This project has a prior research on the same network of centers on first psychotic episodes. Both the first project and the current one have received grants from the Instituto de Salud Carlos III dedicated to psychiatry.

In this case, the study will follow up for three years, a cohort of patients in remission after a first psychotic episode of schizophrenia, to determine factors linked to relapse. They will study variables such as cognitive and biological parameters, neuroimaging scans, compliance and adherence to treatment, physical health and toxic usage among others.

It is expected that the results will help prevent relapse in people who have suffered an episode of schizophrenia.
